One of the items up for bids on March 5 at the Cretan Celebration 2016 Silent Auction is this amazing painting by Golfo Grapsa Tsakumis!  Her colorful style is widely recognized and each piece creates a flurry of discussion however the art is only a small piece of Golfo’s fascinating story. First and foremost, she is a wife (recently celebrating 45 years of marriage), a mother (of five) and a grandmother (including a set of triplets).  Golfo has not always painted but she has always created.   Did you know in her previous career, her floral designs were selected to adorn the Royal Suite during the Royal Couple’s Expo 86 visit? Ahh don’t we remember that BC event fondly?

Golfo supports many causes through her art but near and dear to her heart is the Mahi Society (Mothers Assisting Humanitarian Initiatives). Founded by Golfo and created by Greek mothers wanting to making a difference in alleviating suffering,  Mahi is collecting donations of clothing and supplies for a container shipment to Greece. Two supporting initiatives currently under way are “Saving the Child’s Smile”  and “A Baby Shower”  coming up on March 26.

Golfo Grapsa Tsakumis is a Cretan Association of BC “Friend of Cretans” supporter and we thank her for her donation to our silent auction.  The proceeds will provide new dancing costumes for our littlest dancers and support the Cretan dancing program.

If you have not got your tickets to this event, there are still some available. Come eat, drink, dance and bid! Bring cash or cheques and you could soon see this beautiful piece on the wall in your home!

Silent Auction Funds New Dance Group Costumes!

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Our dance youth group is growing in numbers and we are in desperate need of traditional folk costumes for our younger dancers.  The Cretan Association is a nonprofit organization formed almost 50 years ago with a purpose of teaching and enhancing our cultural traditions to our members. We promote our Cretan heritage through community sponsored events such as the Greek Days, Greek Food Festivals and our own Cretan member dances. Our dance groups are key to engaging our children and grandchildren with their heritage.

On March 5, 2016 we will be hosting Κρητικο Γλεντι 2016 Cretan Celebration for our members and guests, with performances from Cretan musicians and our own Cretan dancers, ‘Minotavri’.

On behalf of Cretan Association of BC we are requesting donations from our community to support our silent auction fundraising efforts.

Please consider donating prizes for the silent auction. If you know of a company who would like to donate prizes for this great cause, please contact Mary Stewart at 604 837-5147 or Julie Clark at clarkfasoulakis@yahoo.com and they will provide you with a Board Letter of Request or they will send one on behalf of the Board.

We recognize that many organizations fundraise for worthy causes and thank everyone in advance for your decision to support the Cretan Association.

Be prepared to want…we are putting together some wonderful packages to bid on during the evening’s celebration. Make sure you have your tickets. Advance tickets must be purchased or reserved as we are continuing to not sell tickets at the door. Call myself 778-321-3270, Effie 604-220-6744, or Terpsi 604-733-9794 for tickets.

Thank you for supporting this worthy cause!

On behalf of the Cretan Association of BC

Join us for the Κρητικο Γλεντι 2016 Cretan Celebration

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Here all the way from Hania Crete, Andreas Lilikakis will be playing the Cretan Lyra.  Also joining us is Yiannis Sahamis on Greek Bouzouki.  Two talented performers and dinner and dessert all for $60.00 per person! (under 12 $25.00)

A silent auction is in the works…come try out your bid!

Advance tickets must be purchased or reserved as we are continuing to not sell tickets at the door.  We know everyone understands this change. All those attending want nice seats and food waiting for them and their guests. The Association can only make that happen if you let us know you are coming!  The Association also cannot afford to pay for extra meals that may or may not cover people deciding to come at the last minute. In the past that has meant a guess of up to 20% extra.

Bring your family and friends, including those who may want to relive their Cretan vacation for a night!  See you there!

The Joy of Dancing!

Thank you to Zeljko Eftihi Loncar for this image!

At our recent Membership Dance Apokries 2015, guests were treated to a wonderful display of our dancing group’s talent with an impromptu showcase of our new Reverend Father Constantinos Economos’ enviable dance moves. What fun!

So why at times was the dance floor bare and how come more women are dancing than men? If you were listening to “table talk” you might have heard:

• I missed out on dance lessons when I was younger because …
• I was too busy working and didn’t have time (for dance lessons)…
• I have not seen any dance lessons for adults since I was married to…

If we all agree “Dance plays an important role in the life of a Cretan with traditional dance being passed from generation to generation.” then the Board is interested in helping everyone get up on the dance floor and pass on this tradition. If you would consider taking a short term class to learn one or two basic Cretan dances please fill out this survey. Let’s get your OPA on!

Don’t forget to register your children in dance so they can’t say they missed out on lessons when they grow up! Children can join our dance groups anytime during the year.

Cretans Supporting Communities at Home!

Even though we are far away from our country, our hearts are close to our fellow friends and families. We see and hear through the news, how the economic crisis in Greece has impacted people’s ability to properly support themselves and care for their families.

Now our fellow Cretans are faced with natural weather phenomena; tsunami like ocean conditions, heavy rains, flooding and snow.  We hear that many churches in Crete are serving the needy in numbers not seen before.

Cretans have a proud history that demonstrates how we accomplish great things when we stand together side by side.  The Holocaust of Arkadi (1866), Enosis of Crete (1913) and the Battle of Crete (1941) highlight the resilience, bravery and will of the Cretans to overcome and persevere.

This time, we may be spread around the world but our resolve is the same.  We want to support our brothers and sisters when they have a need.

As you know the MAHI (Mothers Assisting Humanitarian Initiatives) Society is collecting new and used donations; clothing, toys, and basic household necessities for a container shipping at the end of January. The container is going to Greece and one of the inner containers is destined for Crete to alleviate the hardship caused by these recent events. Especially hit hard is Iraklion and Rethymnon but the donations will be distributed across Crete. The MAHI Society is also looking for cash donations to be used to purchase goods directly.

At the most recent meeting the Executive, on behalf of the members, voted to make a financial contribution to the MAHI Society.   The Association challenges our members to make a point over the next two weeks to donate funds and goods to the MAHI Society, if you have not already.  Click on this link to see their website and this one to get to their facebook.

Looking at the longer term, we here in Canada are fortunate to have a relatively stable standard of living.  On a personal level and as an association this may be an appropriate time to consider how we can make philanthropy a higher priority. Can we commit a certain amount of our household budgets and set aside funds from events to donate regularly to our local community here and in Crete?

There are many trusted channels to facilitate donations such as the MAHI Society, your local Philoptochos or church as well as your home village or towns’ church.  When funds are sent to Crete to organizations to purchase goods locally, it helps stimulate their businesses which in turn helps businesses succeed and hire employees which in turn helps mothers and fathers support healthy families.

As members of the global Cretan diaspora, we also challenge our fellow Cretan Associations located around the world to consider how the flow of support to Crete can be increased at this time. Let’s carry on the conversation and share information. What organizations are successfully delivering help to the needy in Crete and what is the optimum way to inject more goods and funds to support the Cretan communities that our hearts hold dear?

Iraklis (Herc) Kallergis, President on behalf of the Board
